Having engagement photos taken is a great way to commemorate your huge life milestone, but you also may want to reconsider before shelling out hundreds of dollars to do them at a professional studio. Chances are you know someone who is either a hobbyist photographer or semi-professional, and usually that is more than good enough to do engagement pictures. However, the one thing that most amateur photographers lack is a great place to take the photos, and so you need to be creative if you want your pictures to turn out amazing. Fortunately, there are some things you can do in your very own backyard that will be amazing and affordable.
Now, before I get too far into this, I must preface that you’ll need a decent yard to pull this off. If you live in an urban area with a very small yard, you might not have enough variety of backdrops available to make it a viable option. However, if you feel your home has what it takes, here are a few ways to make your backyard engagement photos really pop.
Garden Setting
If your yard happens to have a flower garden, then you might have hit the jackpot. There is nothing better than photos with beautiful flowers around the happy couple, and you can use different angles to make even a tiny garden seem like a never ending field of blossoms. If your garden is setup more for vegetables, then you’ll probably want to add a few flowers using a photo editing software of your choosing. There are many free options out there for the budget-conscious couple, so you can pull it off without having to spend any money.
Using Props
Props can make an ordinary setting seem magical, and usually you have plenty of items already sitting around your home to make it work. Perhaps you have a “shabby-chic” chair in your den that is primarily used for decorations that would make a great focal point in one or more of your engagement photos. If you have a particularly small yard, you can use sparklers designed for wedding photo shoots to create outlines around the couple as they kiss in the darkness of night. The lack of light will mask the fact that your yard is small or cluttered and the light from the sparklers will highlight beauty of your kiss.
Sunset Backdrop
Last, but certainly not least, you can use the sunset as your backdrop for an awe-inspiring photo. Whether it’s your front yard or your backyard, chances are you can get a great angle of the sunset with the couple kissing in the foreground. If you live in a major city or urban area, you can always head to the rooftop to make your photo even more romantic with the skyline of building in the background as well. No matter where you happen to live, you can usually create some beautiful engagement photos right in your own backyard if you just use what the world has given you to work with.
