Warning Signs to Look For
If you have a tree on your property, then it is down to you to make sure that it is in good health and doesn’t pose a risk to buildings or people. How can you tell if a tree is dangerous, though? There are some warning signs to look out for – some of which are more obvious than others. If you do notice any worrying changes in your tree, then you need to get in touch with a trusted team like Kent Tree Brothers as soon as possible.
It’s leaning
If you notice that your tree is leaning more than usual, that’s a sign to give your local tree surgeon a call. Some trees have a noticeable lean and are in good health. It’s just the way they have grown! If your tree is leaning more than usual, though, it could be a sign that it isn’t as stable as it once was. It’s much better to be safe than sorry, so get it looked at as soon as possible.
The roots look different
Chances are, you don’t spend a lot of time looking at your tree’s roots. It’s a good idea to check them over every so often, though! Weak or rotten roots are a clear indicator that the tree is the same inside. This might be hard to spot, but things like mushrooms and fungi growing around the base of your tree are a bad sign. Cracked or raised soil is another thing that can point to a tree’s roots being in poor condition.
Cracks in the trunk
Cracks in the trunk can be a sign that your tree is dying. Patches of missing bark, known as cankers, are also another sign that a tree isn’t in the best health. As well as looking unsightly, deep cracks in a tree trunk are also very dangerous. They can make a trunk much weaker. Once any severe weather arrives in the autumn, you could have a tree that is only one bad storm away from falling down.
The tree is too big
A large tree isn’t something that is dangerous in itself. If you couple it with any of the above, though, it could pose even more of a risk than an average height tree. A tree that has grown very large can also be a danger if it is close to buildings or things like power lines. A tree surgeon will be able to tell you if it can be reduced in size. Don’t delay in getting in touch, as the tree will only get bigger in the meantime!
Always leave it to the professionals
Whether it is something we have mentioned, or your gut is just telling you that something isn’t right with your tree and it could be dangerous, don’t attempt to work on it yourself. The tree could be unsteady and put you and others at risk. A tree surgeon will be able to get the job done quickly and safely. Calling them is always the better option.
